Discrete Variational Calculus for B-spline Approximated Curves

چکیده
We study variational problems for curves approximated by B-spline curves. We show that one can obtain discrete Euler-Lagrange equations for the data describing the approximated curves. Our main application is to the occluded curve problem in 2D and 3D. In this case, the aim is to find various aesthetically pleasing solutions as opposed to a solution of a physical problem. The Lagrangians of interest are invariant under the special Euclidean group action for which B-spline approximated curves are well suited. Smooth Lagrangians with special Euclidean symmetries involve curvature, torsion, and arc length. Expressions in these, in the original coordinates, are highly complex. We show that, by contrast, relatively simple discrete Lagrangians offer excellent results for the occluded curve problem. The methods we develop for the discrete occluded curve problem are general and can be used to solve other discrete variational problems for B-spline curves.

Approximation with Active B-Spline Curves and Surfaces
An active contour model for parametric curve and surface approximation is presented. The active curve or surface adapts to the model shape to be approximated in an optimization algorithm. The quasi-Newton optimization procedure in each iteration step minimizes a quadratic function which is built up with help of local quadratic approximants of the squared distance function of the model shape and...
متن کاملVariational Interpolation of Subsets
We consider the problem of variational interpolation of subsets of Euclidean spaces by curves such that the L norm of the second derivative is minimized. It is well known that the resulting curves are cubic spline curves. We study geometric boundary conditions arising for various types of subsets such as subspaces, polyhedra, and submanifolds, and we indicate how solutions can be computed in th...
متن کاملInteractive design of constrained variational curves
A constrained variational curve is a curve that minimizes some energy functional under certain interpolation constraints. Modeling curves using constrained variational principles is attractive, because the designer is not bothered with the precise representation of the curve (e.g. control points). Until now, the modeling of variational curves is mainly done by means of constraints. If such a cu...
متن کاملAVI as a mechanical tool for studying dynamic and static beam structures
In this paper we study the dynamic behavior of an isotropic KirchhoffLove beam and investigate the equilibrium position of an Euler-Bernoulli beam. Using the discrete Euler-Lagrange and Lagrange-d’Alembert principles, we simulate the behavior by means of variational integrators and, in particular, AVIs (Asynchronous Variational Integrators). We place special emphasis on the geometric structure ...
متن کاملVariational Surface Design and Surface Interrogation
The generation of technical smooth surfaces from a mesh of three-dimensional data points is an important problem in geometric modelling. In this publication we give a survey of some new techniques based on a calculus of variation approach. Apart from the pure construction of these surfaces, the analysis of their quality is equally important in the design and manufacturing process. Generalized f...
